Entrance scholarships

International students at Memorial University are eligible to apply for and, if funds permit, earn scholarships and awards upon admission. You will be immediately considered for an admission scholarship if you match the requirements; however, this does not guarantee that you will be awarded one. In other words, no further application is required.

Scholarships for international admission are given out for a student’s first year of study and are not renewed. Only those international transfer students who transfer less than 31 credit hours will be eligible for an admission scholarship.

If students are awarded a scholarship, they will be informed.

Entrance scholarships include:

Newfoundland Memorial University International Entrance Scholarship

Memorial University of Newfoundland established these scholarships by a May 2003 Board of Regents decision designating a percentage of international undergraduate students’ tuition costs for International Scholarships.

The amounts will differ, but they won’t go over $6,000 apiece per year. To be eligible for these scholarships, a student must be able to pay the entire cost of an international undergraduate degree, be enrolled in the Memorial University of Newfoundland for at least nine credit hours during each of the first two semesters of their academic year, normally have less than thirty-one credit hours in transfer credits, and meet scholarship standing requirements (which are similar to those for applicants from Newfoundland, Labrador, and Canada).

The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards will be responsible for awarding these scholarships.

IUGS Entrance Scholarship for Undergraduate Students

The university has granted this scholarship in part by using money from the St. John’s International undergraduate student tuition fees (IUGS). It will be given to incoming foreign undergraduate students at St. John’s campus.

The scholarship has a $6,000 value and is not often renewed. A student must achieve scholarship standing requirements (similar to those for Canadian and Newfoundland and Labrador candidates) and be able to pay the entire foreign undergraduate fees to be considered for this scholarship.

This award cannot be held in conjunction with another significant value general international admission scholarship. The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards will oversee the scholarship program, acting at the suggestion of the Director of the Internationalization Office and the Registrar, or their designees.

Fortis Inc. – H. Stanley Marshall Scholarship

In honor of Mr. Stanley Marshall, who retired from Fortis Inc. after 35 years of service, this scholarship has been established. During his tenure at Fortis Inc., the company expanded from one utility in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador to a dominant force in the North American gas and electric utility industry, providing services to clients in the Caribbean, the United States, and Canada.

The scholarship, which is valued at a percentage of the endowment’s income, will help Memorial University of Newfoundland’s undergraduate students who want to become faculty members or enter professional schools. The scholarship may be given to a student who has completed more than their first year at Memorial University of Newfoundland if no qualified applicant is accepted.

A student in any field of study may be awarded the scholarship if there isn’t an eligible student in any given year of a professional program. Candidates must be in good standing to be considered for scholarships.

The need for money could also be taken into account. The receiver must be a citizen of Belize, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Cayman Islands, or another Caribbean nation, in that order of preference. The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards will make the scholarship award.

Killam American Undergraduate Scholarship

The philanthropic trusts of Isaac Walton Killam’s sisters in Massachusetts have contributed to the Memorial University of Newfoundland in his memory, creating this scholarship fund. The fund will give American undergraduate students who want to attend Memorial University of Newfoundland one or more entry scholarships.

Citizens of the United States who satisfy Memorial University of Newfoundland’s existing admissions requirements and exhibit a level of scholarship commensurate with that required of applicants from Canada, Newfoundland, and Labrador will be eligible.

Typically, recipients must enroll at Memorial University of Newfoundland as full-time undergraduate students for at least three courses (9 credit hours) in each of the first two semesters of their first academic year there and have fewer than 31 credit hours in transfer credits.

The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards will decide which scholarship(s) to give out based on the Director of Student Recruitment’s proposal.

Don and Mona Dooley (OLOF) Thailand Scholarship

Don and Mona Dooley’s estate made a substantial grant to establish this scholarship. While he was working for a multinational company that provided wine and spirits to American military installations in Thailand, Nepal, and India between 1966 and 1970, Don and Mona resided in Thailand. The Dooleys developed a deep affection for Thailand and its populace during their four years there.

They frequently traveled back to Thailand after leaving Newfoundland to vacation and see friends. Their way of giving back to the nation that played such a significant role in their lives is through this scholarship. An annual scholarship worth a percentage of the endowment’s profits will be given to a Thai student who satisfies the scholarship’s minimal academic standards.

If there isn’t a qualifying Thai student in a given year, the money could be kept over for the next year or given to a qualified student from Southeast Asia. The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards will make the award.
