AUB is a research institution that prioritizes teaching, with about 8,000 students enrolled and 800 instructional faculty members.

In addition to promoting freedom of speech, the university aims to graduate students who are dedicated to leadership, civic engagement, lifelong learning, creative and critical thinking, and personal integrity.

The university comprises seven faculties: Agricultural and Food Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Architecture (Maroun Semaan Faculty), Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing (Rafic Hariri School), and Business (Suliman S. Olayan School). At the moment, AUB provides more than 130 programs that lead to degrees in medicine, dentistry, philosophy, and biology. In 1922, the University transitioned to a coeducational campus, with 50% male and 50% female students. Except for courses offered by the Arabic Department and other language courses, instruction is conducted in English.
