Kansas State University Graduate Assistantship 2024

Assistantships are normally appointed at 0.5 FTE, or 20 hours a week on average, but appointments at lower fractions can be made as well. Typically, appointments last nine or twelve months. Appointments may be extended only if funding is available, performance standards are met, and academic standing is upheld.

Categories of assistantships

Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA)

A GTA carries out tasks that further both the student’s academic objectives and K-State’s teaching mission. These responsibilities could include teaching in a classroom or lab, proctoring tests, grading papers, exams, and other assignments, creating teaching materials, or providing general support for the teaching process. The Kansas State University Policy and Procedures Manual, Chapter 4845, must be followed for GTA appointments and pay.

Usually, a graduate student’s academic department or program assigns GTA appointments. Regarding GTA options, prospective and present graduate students should speak with their graduate program.

Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)

A GRA carries out tasks that further both the student’s academic objectives and K-State’s research mission. While research responsibilities vary, graduate faculty oversee the work. The research project that the students are working on might be included in their dissertation or thesis. The Kansas State University Policy and Procedures Manual, Chapter 4835, must be followed for GRA appointments and pay.

The academic department or program of a graduate student usually assigns GRA appointments. Regarding GRA options, prospective and present graduate students should speak with their graduate program.

Graduate Assistant (GA)

A graduate assistant (GA) carries out tasks that either directly or indirectly support a graduate student’s academic progress. While their responsibilities might vary, they usually involve administrative services such as information collection, organization, and analysis; student services; administrative work supporting a program or organizational unit; or regular research support activities. Chapter 4720 of the Kansas State University Policy and Procedures Manual must be followed to support GAs.

Campus units that aren’t academic offer the majority of GA appointments.

Obtaining an assistantship

The majority of GTAs and GRAs are appointed by specific graduate programs and departments. Your graduate program should let you know whether or not they can offer you an assistantship at the time of application and admission.

Job openings for graduate assistantships (GA) are frequently posted by student assistance units through the Career Center’s Handshake job listing system. To find out if there are any assistantship possibilities available, you can also browse the websites of student assistance departments or get in touch with them.

The College of Education website lists a lot of GA possibilities since these jobs frequently fit the professional objectives of graduate students pursuing a career in student affairs. Nevertheless, students from all academic disciplines encourage applicants for these positions.
