EcoPlanet Bamboo Calls For Job Applications

POSITION: GIS & Remote Sensing Manager

ABOUT US

Our global company uses our successful landscape restoration model to address three of the world’s most pressing environmental issues: climate change mitigation, holistic restoration of the world’s most degraded landscapes, and a growing population that needs sustainable alternatives to consumer products and markets that continue to deforest and emit. Through carbon-financed bamboo plantations in Nicaragua, South Africa, Ghana, Rwanda, and the Philippines, we spent the past decade preparing bamboo to solve this challenge.

Two Verified Carbon Standard-recognized carbon replanting initiatives are underway in Ghana’s Ashanti Region’s North Bandai and Bandai Hills Forest Reserves. The 11,000 hectares under control include 5,500 ha of bamboo in remnant trees and conservation zones and equivalent amounts of native species regeneration. Since 2021, 650-person teams have planted 3,150 acres, with the rest by 2025.

The projects are increasing, with new reforestation areas and activities added to our 2024 and 2025 operational plans and their first carbon verification event approaching. These operations’ biggest danger is fire, thus remote sensing sensors help the project’s operational staff manage it.

EcoPlanet needs a skilled GIS & Remote Sensing expert for a 12-month contract that can be extended to 24 months in our field office in Ghana’s Agogo region. This position will oversee all monitoring, reporting, and verification activities and train the current GIS and planning teams to refine and streamline data collection, resulting in on-time maps that show operational achievements and carbon monitoring results.

Location: EcoPlanet’s Field Headquarters, Ashanti, Ghana.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct historical and current land use mapping to establish the eligibility of new project locations.
  • Analyse the numerous new technologies on the market aimed at carbon replanting projects and determine their appropriateness to the project’s current and developing context.
  • Conduct an annual NDVI analysis to visually represent the changes in the project landscape over time;
  • Create and manage reforestation maps and data using ArcGIS, Dropbox, and/or other data management tools;
  • Create mapping and monitoring systems to spatially track weekly operations against operational plans, and communicate progress within the business.
  • Track data from various activities and give spatial analysis of operational demands, from activity planning to implementation to monitoring operational success.
  • Create in-house solutions for remote sensing of fire throughout fire season, and collaborate with operational managers to perform operations based on such spatial data.
  • Oversee spatial monitoring data, which includes creating randomized weekly data points to evaluate field operations.
  • Carry out mapping requirements for carbon monitoring and verification events;
  • Analyse prospective new areas for project development against the certification standard eligibility requirements.
  • Train and guide current teams to scale GIS, mapping, and monitoring needs for the project;
  • Perform any other tasks that may be required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS and remote sensing, plus at least eight years of related experience;
  • Experience with modern Earth Observation tools, technologies, and best practices.
  • Experience building up and managing databases.
  • Ability to work under pressure and fulfill deadlines.
  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision and as part of a team when necessary;
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work in the field in any weather;
  • Drone pilot expertise and the transmission of aerial maps.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
